In 2012, we were given the task of creating symbols for the Olympics. I, Sacha Johnston, created symbols as if the Olympics were being held in my home country, South Africa. Firstly, South Africa, although a part of Africa, is a very westernized, modern country. As a result, I wanted my symbols to represent both its African origin, but also it’s existence in the modern world. The disconnected head, elongated body, colors, and body pattern were derived from traditional African art, while the clean elegance of the whole system help to give it a modernized tone and mood. Later in the fall of 2014, I decided to develop my project further and make a whole system for my Olympic symbols. As a result, I created a logo, banners, tickets, and nametags to incorporate my symbols.
